David Castillo Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Miami-based artist Hugo Montoya In Heaven Everything Is Fine. The artist has previously shown with the gallery in the Art Basel group show Destroy This City.
Montoya received his B.F.A. from Florida International University in 2003, and has previously exhibited in group shows throughout Miami. His photography is sometimes completely planned and other times, altogether random. Both music & light are central sources for the artist’s work. Montoya’s photography could not exist without either. When observing the structure of each photograph, one readily sees a musical order or lack of order to the work- depressing or uplifting music may have been the source for a particular work.
Montoya has described the present photographs as having shifted from cynicism toward romanticism. Whether the dynamic observed in a particular work is the random/magical or the entirely staged, the works are a journal of the end and the beginning of life with friends. The works are documentary pictures that tell the story the artist would have us believe.
