The Flight of Icarus

Javier Piñón
December 1, 2009 - January 2, 2010

With his meticulously constructed collages and a new large-scale installation, Javier Piñón retells the myth of Icarus as a sci-fi fantasy set in the American West.  The American cowboy, the longtime protagonist in Piñón’s work, is here cast in the role of Icarus and aspires to escape the confines of his earthly limits.  Whether leaping from rocky cliffs on fragile wings or shooting across time and space upon an archaic machine, his tragic fall serves as a fitting cautionary tale.

Born in Miami and based in Brooklyn, Javier Piñón has exhibited nationally and internationally after earning his MAT from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI.  His work has appeared in ArtReviewArt in America, the New York Times, and the New Yorker, among numerous other publications.
