Under these circumstances one usually loses a shoe

David Castillo is pleased to present a solo project room exhibition by Monika Zarzeczna, Under these circumstances one usually loses a shoe. The exhibition consists of a series of drawings which deal with human attraction to death and disaster, which are oftentimes also the beginning of freedom and adventure. The works are informed by the flatness of Early Italian Renaissance frescoes. The drawings’ dialogue as well as execution is concerned not only with central figures but rather entire compositions, giving every detail and central figure an equal place in the resulting works through a strong sense of movement and lack of control.

Monika Zarzeczna was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1975 and currently lives and works in New York. She has exhibited in Europe as well as New York at such venues as White Columns, the Sculpture Center, and Artists Space. She has received numerous awards and residencies including the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in 2006.

The artist has a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
